A maior satisfação que os livros lhe proporcionavam era iniciar a leitura dos mesmos. Podia então, dizer com orgulho que conhecia muitos livros, assim, de passagem. Pra ser honesto, algumas páginas.
Aprendera com o pai, que a primeira frase, de qualquer livro, deve ser aquela que conquistará o leitor. Ou não. E que, considerando a melhor hipótese, ainda que menos provável, convencerá o leitor a entregar-se ao desafio (por vezes desumano), de percorrer atentamente as trezentas, quatrocentas, quinhentas páginas (o leitor é exigente) de um bom livro, que tenha uma linda capa, colorida, um papel leve, suave, delicado; e letras grandes; e ao deparar-se com a palavra “fim”, sentir-se-á o leitor como que aliviado, decepcionado ou agradecido ao autor da proeza que lhe permitirá matar o tempo com coisa útil e alguma dignidade.
Mas, naquela manhã, que apenas se iniciava, enquanto se deparava com os títulos recém-adquiridos, que ganhavam espaço na estante da sala, envolvido novamente por aquela cínica relação que havia desde muito cedo, entre ele e os livros, pensava se, de fato, valia mesmo a pena publicar aquele anúncio no jornal.
Pensou muito. Ou seja, dois ou três minutos, que era o tanto que lhe permitia a sua paciência, e resolveu guardar o anúncio na gaveta da mesa do escritório, nos fundos da casa, certamente um lugar seguro, onde poderia ficar tranquilo que suas inconfessáveis aspirações mundanas estariam bem longe do olhar daqueles que o admiravam.
Dizia o anúncio: HOMEM PROCURA UM NOVO AMOR.
Mas não era disso que tratava o anúncio, bastante claro e certo na sua mente, mas que relutava em descer por seu braço, como uma vontade imperativa, e alcançar sua mão, até chegar ao papel diante de si e tornar-se realidade.
Deitou o lápis pela terceira vez, num intervalo de alguns minutos e, de repente, lembrou-se que as compras que fizera no supermercado, ainda estavam sobre a mesa da cozinha. Alface, couve, cenoura, pães, alho, cebola, ovos. Nunca se perguntara por que comprava tantas verduras frescas se, em geral, elas acabavam estragando na geladeira.
Sua última companhia, na mais verdadeira acepção da palavra, fora o Sr. Manoel; Manoel Periquitão, o coelho orelhudo, sem procedência. Morrera havia alguns meses. O cachorro pulguento, Mr. Albert Mordomo, havia morrido há quase um ano. E Miss Mary, a calopsita histérica, padecera do mal do cocho vazio, também conhecido à boca miúda como: miséria. Fazia, portanto, cerca de dois anos, (se não errara nas contas) da derradeira vítima de sua avareza, a afinadíssima e pontual Miss Mary. Dois anos… Dois? Nunca fora mesmo muito bom para fazer contas, razão pela qual, após todos esses padecimentos em seu entorno, entes queridos que o deixasse a ver navios, ele resolvera vez por todas, desposar a Sra. Solidão, codinome “Amor Impossível” ou simplesmente “A loira da loja”.
Mas, voltemos ao anúncio que ainda não chegara ao papel.
Era fator primordial que ela, a desejada, fosse solteira e não tivesse história que pudesse de repente, saltar da sepultura do passado e atormentar a sua maturidade que certamente pareceria caminhar muito bem para um final feliz.
Muito improvável, entretanto, que encontrasse uma mulher da sua idade, que não tivesse uma ou várias histórias no currículo sentimental dos amores não correspondidos. Muito difícil. Jamais encontraria em pleno século 21, alguém da sua idade, que já não houvesse conhecido o amor. Ou seja, alguém que não tivesse nada para constar nas páginas desabonadoras da existência humana.
Uma ocasião, Sid, a sua amiga, carioca da gema, lhe disse, depois de pensar um tanto:
“…Bom, querido, talvez você deva observar a realidade sob um ângulo diferente”.
Perguntou-lhe qual, e a resposta foi dura e seca, como em nenhuma outra circunstância poderia ter sido.
“Um homem. Já se interessou por um?”
“Não”.
“Talvez deva tentar”
Mas ele insistiu:
“Não, mesmo”.
“Muita gente, hoje em dia, prefere…”.
Mas não permitiu que sua amiga Sid concluísse a argumentação de uma probabilidade que ele considerava estúpida e absurda.
“Relações homo afetivas costumam ser mais sinceras, amistosas e confiáveis” – disse ela.
“Desejo muito boa sorte a todos que optam por isso. Mas, para mim, não serve. Ainda não me chamo Vanessa, querida. Continuo a me chamar Maxwell. Maxwell Miller de Freitas, e tenho 60 anos bem vividos. Pelos no rosto e alguma coisa no meio das pernas, que clama por um minuto de atenção, já há bastante tempo”.
“Talvez eu possa ajudá-lo, querido!” – disse ela, de modo sugestivo e olhar insinuante.
“Não, você não pode. Não tenho casa, nem automóvel, nem dinheiro no banco. E minha aposentadoria está toda comprometida com empréstimos consignados, até pelo menos, se não estou errado, daqui uns 2 ou 3 anos, ainda. Isso responde ao seu questionário?”
“Você acha que eu sou, como aquelas senhoras, que você tira pra dançar nos bailinhos da vida, aos domingos à tarde”.
“Pra seu governo, meu anjo, deixei de frequentar os bailinhos da vida, já faz muito tempo”.
“Pois deveria voltar a frequentá-los. Sempre se arruma alguma companhia nesses lugares”.
“Talvez eu o faça. Daqui um ou dois anos. Mas, talvez, eu já lhe dê as respostas do questionário prontas. Pois não creio que elas mudem até lá”.
“Você é muito rigoroso no seu conceito em relação às mulheres, querido!”
“Não, Sid, eu sou realista. E não venha você me dizer o contrário”.
Ria muito toda vez que se lembrava desse inusitado diálogo com Sid, sua amiga carioca. Passado algum tempo, já sentia até, saudade dela.
