Categoria que mais se mexe publicamente para tentar ajustar um calendário possível para a temporada 2020, a Indy anunciou novas mudanças para os próximos meses.
O GP de Detroit, rodada dupla marcada para o último fim de semana de maio, foi cancelada. Por outro lado, a categoria transformou as etapas de Iowa e Laguna Seca em rodadas duplas e criou uma segunda corrida no misto de Indianápolis.
O comunicado foi assinado por Mark Miles, presidente e diretor-executivo da Corporação Penske. Com as mudanças anunciadas, apesar do cancelamento da rodada dupla de Detroit, a temporada ganha uma corrida a mais: neste momento, conta com 15 datas.
“Estamos comprometidos a levar aos fãs o máximo de ação possível nas pistas. Nosso calendário atualizado tem corridas adicionais nos locais favoritos dos fãs e acrescenta ao número total de provas. A situação do Covid-19 continua a ser dinâmica e desafiadora para todos, então precisamos desenvolver planos de contingências que nos permitam responder a mudanças de condições. Nosso objetivo é preservar o máximo possível a competição priorizando a saúde e segurança de nossos participantes e espectadores”, afirmou.
“Como nossos fãs, estamos decepcionados que não vamos correr em Detroit neste ano. Entretanto, estamos animados em voltar para Belle Isle em 2021 e sei que teremos um ótimo show para todos quando o fizermos. Também apreciamos a flexibilidade e apoio de nossos promotores em Iowa e Laguna Seca, que rapidamente aceitaram em realizar etapas de rodadas duplas”, encerrou.
Desta forma, a temporada agora está marcada para começar num oval, o do Texas, em 6 de junho. Road America, Richmond, GPs de Indianápolis e Toronto vêm na sequência, até que, nos dias 17 e 18 de julho, acontece a rodada dupla do oval do Iowa. Já Laguna Seca, que era o palco da decisão no calendário original, fica com duas provas 19 e 20 de setembro. O GP de Indianápolis 2 fica para 3 de outubro.
