O Japão voltará a ter um piloto na Fórmula 1. Como era aguardado, a AlphaTauri anunciou que Yuki Tsunoda será o companheiro de Pierre Gasly em 2021, em substituição ao russo Daniil Kvyat. Em sua conta no Twitter, a escuderia italiana deu as boas-vindas a Tsunoda.
Piloto reserva da RBR na F1, o asiático de 20 anos foi um dos destaques do campeonato de Fórmula 2 desta temporada, vencido por Mick Schumacher (Prema), a nova atração da Haas. Vencendo três provas, Tsunoda somou ao todo 200 pontos e ficou a somente 1 do vice-campeão, o britânico Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi). O filho de Michael Schumacher conquistou o título com 215.
Kamui Kobayashi foi o último japonês na F1, em 2014. A dinastia samurai na categoria teve início em 1975 com Hiroshi Fushida, que chegou a se classificar para largar em uma prova na Holanda, mas o motor de sua Maki (equipe nipônica) não deixou e o azarado Fushida ficou fora do grid. Aguri Suzuki (3º em 1990 no Japão, pela Larrousse) e Takuma Sato (3º em 2004 nos EUA, pela BAR) foram os únicos japoneses a subirem no pódio.
